Jake & Courtney Eloped!

Jake & Courtney sitting under a tree, sharing a kiss. In the foreground is their wedding cake, a white cake with gold leaf topped with roses and a small round card that says "we eloped!"

Since large weddings are on hold for the foreseeable future, we decided to go ahead and have a small elopement! We were so lucky to have the loving support from our family and friends that allowed us to make this little bit of magic happen in such hard times. We wanted to share our happy moment with friends and family who weren’t able to attend, so please explore our elopement site and share our memories until we can safely celebrate together in person.

Thank you to our parents, Kristin & Erik Dossett, Kendall & Darin Churchill, and Bill Skelcher,  and the rest of our friends and familyfor supporting us and loving us throughout all of this.

A very special thanks to Derek Kraneveldt & Mika Maxwell for witnessing our special day and ferrying the groom, to Cat Zoerb for capturing every moment, and David Zoerb for officiating our wedding. We love you all and could not have made this happen without you.

Our Love Story

Jake & Courtney met through their mutual friend Derek in the early summer of 2018. Derek and Courtney had co-hosted on the Geekscape Games Podcast for a few years, when Jake dropped in on one of their virtual recording sessions.  They started chatting after the recording and hit it off, talking daily for the next month or so. They met in person for the first time during a group camping trip that summer at Miracle Beach, B.C., and have been together ever since.

Over the next two years, they made the international trek back and forth from Vancouver Island and Washington to spend long weekends together, holidays with family, and day trips with friends. They bonded over their love of science fiction, table top and video games, anime and cats.

Jake & Courtney have gone to several pop culture conventions and explored much of the Pacific Northwest in their short time together.

Our Elopement

Our elopement was probably the worst kept secret in North America, but we tried our best to keep it under wraps!

Peace Arch Park is a special place on the Washington- British Columbian border where Canadians and Americans can meet without crossing international borders. We felt that it was a beautiful representation of our relationship as well as an easy place for us to hold our ceremony during COVID.

We were limited on how many people could attend because of safety restrictions, and were very lucky to have Courtney’s sister and brother-in-law, and our friends Derek & Mika witness our wedding.

Cat was incredibly kind enough to capture every moment of our wedding. She is an amazingly talented artist as well as my sister and I was so grateful to have her help and support on my wedding day.

David has been a part of our family since he and Cat met when they were in high school, and I’m lucky to have such a caring and funny brother in law. David agreed to officiate our wedding and we were so glad he could make it with Cat to share our day.

Derek & Mika have been there from the start of our relationship – you could blame the whole thing on Derek since he’s why we met! We were both very grateful for both of them bringing us together, and for bringing Jake to the park for us to meet during the pandemic, and again for our wedding! This whole affair wouldn’t be possible without them.

We hope to have a reception to celebrate our marriage with friends and family when it is safe to do so, until then, view all of our beautiful photos from Cat here.

Our Registry

We don’t expect any gifts, but if you would like to help us start our life in Canada we are registered at Amazon.ca (www.amazon.ca/wedding/share/SkelcherForever) and are planning to outfit our new home at Ikea, Canadian Tire, and other Canadian retailers, so gift cards are appreciated.

Thank you!
